Calories in Wine
If you're trying to lose weight or even just maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may be wondering if
the calories in wine are hurting you.
After all, wine bottles never tell you how many calories are in a glass of wine do they? What
are they trying to hide? :)
The typical wine contains about 25 calories per ounce (give or take...one might have 23 calories
while another has 26). The number of ounces per glass depends on who is doing the pouring!
If you go to a restaurant and order a glass of wine you can expect your server to pour about 5
ounces into your glass. That means you'll be consuming about 125 wine calories per glass.
Of course, most of us tend to overpour when we drink wine at home. So if you're at a friend's
house and he pours you a glass of wine there's a good chance it will contain more than the restaurant standard of 5
ounces. It's important to keep that in mind if you're counting calories as you could be counting only 125
calories per glass when you're actually consuming closer to 200!
Wine Calories and Weight Loss
Many people who are concerned with their weight will limit their alcohol intake. But it's important to
remember that unlike soda and other sweetened drinks, wine has health
benefits too.
It would be foolish to completely eliminate wine from your diet just because you are afraid of the calories in
wine. Instead, just keep track of how much you're drinking and don't over-do it. As with anything in
life, moderation is key.
